Editor's Note: Nestled along the Yangtze River and the sea, Jiangsu boasts exceptional port resources. Its unique blend of land-sea connectivity, integrated river-port-seaport system makes it the only province in China with all three types of ports. Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, Jiangsu ports have embraced strategies for a 'prosperous, strong, beautiful, and high-quality' new Jiangsu, striving to transform from a major port province into a powerhouse. On September 6th, under the guidance of the Central Cyberspace Affairs Office, the Jiangsu Cyberspace Administration Office, and the Jiangsu Transportation Department, the "Ports Open the Miles of Flow" themed activity kicked off, inviting you to witness the green, smart, and secure transformation of Jiangsu's ports.

CCTV News Update: On September 7th, the second stop of the "Ports Open the Miles of Flow" activity in Jiangsu took us to Taicang Port. In recent years, Jiangsu has vigorously promoted the integration of harbors and shipping lines, with Taicang港 emerging as the brightest star among them.
Taicang Port, situated on the south bank of the mouth of the Yangtze River, sits at the crossroads of the Yangtze River Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road. It boasts 38.8 kilometers of prime waterfront and -12.5 meters deep water channels. In 2021, Taicang handled 7.038 million TEUs, ranking eighth nationally and 25th globally. It maintained its lead in Jiangsu for four consecutive years and topped the Yangtze River for twelve straight years. Cargo throughput reached 2.43 billion tons, up 14.3% year-on-year.

In pursuit of becoming an internationally competitive modern port, Taicang has integrated deeply into the Yangtze Delta port cluster, adhering to the principle of being a 'role model' and 'demonstration area' while leading the way. The Shanghai Port Empty Container Center's Taicang branch, inaugurated in May, offers 200,000 TEU storage and transfer capacity, streamlining services like container tracking, empty box transportation, repair, washing, release, booking, and coordination with customs. According to Liu Bin, Deputy Manager of Operations at Taicang's Zhenghe International Container Terminal, this center saves local businesses around seven million yuan in logistics costs related to empty containers. This 'local cargo, local transport' approach enhances Taicang's service level.
Advancements in technology, such as unmanned double gantry automated rail-mounted cranes using AR and artificial intelligence, are boosting Taicang's efficiency and driving its digital transformation. At the automated control center of the fourth phase of the container terminal, one operator can manage five cranes, enhancing productivity by 20%. By reducing equipment operators by about 70%, these innovations contribute significantly to operational efficiency.
From January to August 2022, Taicang processed 5.17 million TEUs, setting a record, and is gearing up for an ambitious target of eight million TEUs this year. Looking ahead, Taicang aims to foster downstream growth, stabilize upstream operations, and attract midstream traffic, fostering a comprehensive network of container shipping along the Yangtze and inner rivers. By elevating its role in intermodal transport, Taicang envisions a grand narrative where 'the city thrives with the port, and the port flourishes with the city'. (Text by Gu Zhenrong)
